Piano di Sorrento is experiencing an unprecedented escalation in petty crime: in the last two months, eight e-bike thefts have been reported in Corso Italia alone, forcing exasperated residents to personally guard their belongings.
The latest incident saw residents, using GPS and coordination, track the stolen goods to Ercolano, managing to apprehend one of the suspects at the Piano di Sorrento train station. The young man, caught with the stolen bike along with his escaped accomplices, was handed over to the Carabinieri. Footage released by residents shows the tension in a region that no longer feels protected by the institutions.
Green-Left Alliance MP Francesco Emilio Borrelli weighed in on the case: "When the state fails to guarantee basic security, citizens end up taking over for law enforcement. The courage of those who acted is commendable, but it is unacceptable that civilians should risk their lives to recover their belongings. We demand immediate intervention by the Prefect and a permanent police presence in sensitive areas and at Circumvesuviana stations."
According to Borrelli, the growing impunity of thieves, who come from neighboring towns like Torre Annunziata and Ercolano, risks turning Piano di Sorrento into a land of conquest for criminals: "The law must be rigorously enforced, or trust in institutions will collapse forever."

The situation in Piano di Sorrento is truly worrying. Thefts have increased dramatically, and we see no concrete measures. Residents shouldn't feel forced to take matters into their own hands. We hope the Prefect intervenes soon.
