Pontecagnano – Fear erupted last night, Thursday, January 9th, inside and in the immediate vicinity of the Maximall shopping center in Pontecagnano Faiano. Six young people suffered a sudden illness with symptoms consistent with poisoning: burning eyes, throat irritation, and difficulty breathing.

The alarm was raised quickly: volunteers from Pubblica Assistenza Vopi responded to the scene, providing first aid to the boys, and ambulances from 118 from the Salerno Local Health Authority (ASL) responded.

The Fire Brigade also arrived to assist, busy verifying the causes of the alleged incident and securing the area as a precaution. According to initial information gathered by the intervention forces, it is suspected carbon monoxide poisoning, although technical investigations are still underway to precisely ascertain the origin of the problem (possible leak from a system, fault or other source).

The six boys—whose conditions are not currently causing particular concern—have been transferred to the hospital to undergo all the necessary medical tests and receive the most appropriate treatment.

The shopping center, which was very busy during these early sales evenings, was not subjected to widespread evacuations, but prompt intervention prevented worse consequences. Investigations are underway to reconstruct the exact events and determine any responsibilities. At this time, no other injuries have been reported among those inside the building.

This is a very worrying situation, and I hope the boys recover quickly. Carbon monoxide poisoning is always a serious risk. The systems should be thoroughly inspected to prevent similar incidents in the future.
