Naples – Porta Nolana and the Sanità district are set to become the city's new red zones. The decision has not yet been formalized, but the guidance emerging from the Provincial Committee for Public Order and Safety leaves little doubt: the measure is in an advanced stage of investigation and could be adopted within the next few hours.

Prefect Michele di Bari confirmed this, explaining that work is underway to precisely define the affected road boundaries. This is a technical, but crucial, step that precedes the adoption of extraordinary control measures and restrictions on people in areas considered particularly vulnerable to illegal activity and degradation.

The decision to renovate Porta Nolana and Sanità comes as no surprise. These are two densely populated neighborhoods, plagued by historical challenges that intertwine security, marginalization, and economic pressure.

However, the proclamation of a red zone raises questions that go beyond the urgency of public order: to what extent can emergency measures address structural problems without being accompanied by policies of urban regeneration and social inclusion?

In the short term, the goal is clear: strengthen security, monitor the area, and intervene in public establishments and entertainment businesses deemed at risk. In the medium and long term, however, the most complex issue remains: preventing security from becoming the sole lens through which to interpret and govern crucial parts of the city.

The Committee meeting called for tomorrow will therefore represent not only an administrative transition, but also a test of the balance between legality, rights, and urban cohesion in a Naples that continues to tread the line between emergency and reform.

I hope that these aren't just temporary measures, but that we also work on long-term reforms. Security and rights should go hand in hand for a city like Naples.

It's important that decisions regarding the red zones be taken seriously. Naples needs greater attention and controls, but also policies to improve the social situation, not just emergency measures.
