Castellammare – Mafia boss Vincenzo D'Alessanro and four of his accomplices and loyalists arrested in the Naples Anti-Mafia Directorate raid last May remain in prison. This decision was made by the Eighth Section of the Naples Court of Review, which today discussed the positions of six of the sixteen suspects.
Only Katia Scelzo, defended by criminal lawyer Olga Coda, remains free. The 40-year-old is the daughter of Pietro Scelzo, known as 'o nasone' (big nose), who was killed in a Camorra ambush outside his home in 2006. She was accused of receiving a property from top members of the D'Alessandro clan in exchange for her silence.
The preliminary hearing, however, allows for the continued imprisonment of boss Vincenzo D'Alessandro, known as the youngest uncle of the deceased godfather Michele D'Alessandro's sons. His relative Michele Abbruzzese, known as 'o paciariello,' considered the clan's treasurer, is also eligible. Vincenzo Spista and Giuseppe Oscurato, the latter a relative of city councilor Gennaro Oscurato, elected on a civic list, are also eligible for prison time.
And finally, there is the case of Luciano Verdoliva, who is untraceable and who, according to the preliminary investigation, should be in prison.
The investigation analyzes a series of extortion attacks against merchants and entrepreneurs in Castellammare di Stabia, such as the one carried out personally by the mafia boss Enzo D'Alessandro against a well-known bar whose owner was beaten by his "uncle." It also examines the attack on a well-known fishmonger "guilty" of "daring" to buy fish from his cousin, not from the boss himself.
