The municipal solid waste transport system from the islands in the Gulf of Naples is back in operation, but the alert remains high. This morning, a new update meeting was held at the Prefecture in Naples, convened by Prefect Michele di Bari to review the critical issues related to the transfer of waste from Ischia and Procida to the mainland.
The meeting, which followed those held in recent days, was attended by institutional representatives of the affected municipalities, regional waste and mobility leaders, and the commanders of the maritime district offices. This was a necessary meeting to manage a situation that, in recent days, had assumed the character of a true emergency.
During the meeting, the commander of the Ischia Maritime District Office announced that Traspemar had announced the resumption of service starting last night. This news was welcomed by those present, who emphasized that the extraordinary support provided by Medmar in recent days, with an additional service, has allowed the situation to be kept under control.
According to the findings of the prefectural meeting, Traspemar's resumption of operations should allow the emergency to gradually subside. However, a broader issue remains, related to the structural weaknesses of the waste transport system from the islands, which requires a thorough technical analysis and the identification of definitive solutions.
Precisely with this in mind, the municipalities of the island of Ischia have announced their intention to convene in the coming days for a meeting dedicated exclusively to the management of the service. For his part, Antonello Barretta, General Director of the Integrated Waste Management System for the Campania Region, explained that the matter will be submitted to the Naples 2 Local Authority, with the aim of establishing a supra-municipal management system capable of ensuring greater stability for the system.
Finally, the Campania Region's Directorate General for Mobility has expressed its willingness to explore the potential for expanding freight transport by sea. This solution could, under certain conditions, also include the transfer of non-hazardous municipal solid waste. This option opens up new possibilities, but it will require careful assessment and shared decisions.
