A section of the sidewalk along Lungomare Trieste, in eastern Salerno, suddenly collapsed, leaving a hole approximately two meters long. According to initial assessments, the collapse may be linked to marine erosion, which over time has compromised the subsoil, gradually eroding the base on which the pavement rests.
The immediate response the previous evening, when several residents noticed a suspicious depression and reported the danger, prevented any consequences for passersby. The area was then cordoned off as a precaution, preventing access to the section that subsequently collapsed. This measure proved crucial in preventing accidents in a highly frequented area, especially in the afternoon and evening hours.
Salerno's waterfront is one of the city's most iconic and popular landmarks, and the collapse has rekindled attention on the issue of the stability of coastal infrastructure exposed to the constant action of the sea. Technical assessments will now serve to clarify the extent of the damage and establish the timing and methods of restoration and safety measures for the surrounding area, to prevent further collapses.
