Salerno – Official announcements have not been enough to calm the political storm engulfing the City of Salerno. Mayor Vincenzo Napoli's resignation has drawn scrutiny from the Prefecture and, potentially, the judiciary.
Roberto Celano, Forza Italia's regional group leader, broke the deadlock by filing a formal complaint with Prefect Francesco Esposito, requesting an immediate inspection of the legitimacy and transparency of the process that led the mayor to resign.
According to Celano's complaint, Napoli's resignation lacks a genuine political-administrative basis related to the "proper functioning of the institution." The suspicion raised is that the decision was not an independent one, but rather the result of a carefully planned strategy to accommodate new electoral balances. The complaint emphasizes the need to determine whether there were "external influences or political interference" capable of undermining the Municipality's decision-making autonomy.
The shadow of the "Salerno System"
The crux of the dispute concerns the future of the tricolor sash. For the Forza Italia representative, Naples's withdrawal would be an "instrumental" act, aimed solely at favoring the re-election of the current Governor, Vincenzo De Luca, as mayor. This maneuver, if confirmed, would constitute, according to the complainant, an improper use of institutions for partisan purposes.
The risk of criminal consequences
Celano isn't limiting himself to political criticism, but is also raising the bar on legal matters. The Prefect has been asked to assess whether the evidence gathered could constitute administrative or criminal violations. The request is clear: should any anomalies in the documents or procedures be discovered, the records must be immediately forwarded to the Public Prosecutor's Office for the required investigations. The ball is now in the court of the offices in Piazza Amendola.
