A major operation by the Carabinieri NAS (National Anti-Corruption Unit) in Salerno, with the support of the local company, the Carabinieri Labor Inspectorate, the Territorial Labor Inspectorate, the Municipal Police, and the Local Health Authority (ASL). The checks, carried out pursuant to an inspection order issued by the Public Prosecutor's Office, led to the identification of a property in the historic center where illegal slaughter was allegedly taking place.

According to the Prosecutor's Office, the establishment—managed by a non-EU citizen—was in "poor sanitary conditions": widespread dirt, unfinished and unsanitary walls and ceilings, and the presence of pests. The establishment was immediately suspended.

Seizures: 6 quintals of meat and 1 ton of spoiled food

At the location under arrest, approximately six quintals of meat products and animal carcasses without health markings were seized. At the same time, approximately one ton of poorly preserved foodstuffs, including meat, fish, rice, and legumes, were also seized.

A connected minimarket was also closed "ad horas"

The inspection was extended to a nearby convenience store, believed to be linked to the same individual. It was immediately closed due to serious hygiene and structural deficiencies, with the administrative seizure of over 40 kg of food (vegetables, fish, meat, and frozen cheese) lacking traceability information.

The immediate suspension of business activity was also ordered for the business due to serious health and safety violations.

Further checks in two "ethnic" establishments: kebab shop and second minimarket

In the same context, two other commercial establishments were inspected. A kebab shop was ordered to close for an hour due to serious hygiene and structural deficiencies (presence of pests, non-functioning restrooms, previous soiling, dirty utensils). The business was also suspended due to undeclared work and serious safety deficiencies, and an administrative violation was reported for employing a worker not listed in the required records.

Another convenience store was suspended immediately due to poor hygiene and structural conditions. Approximately 190 kg of poorly preserved animal and plant-based foods were seized inside, and approximately 65 kg of untraceable products (rice, legumes, and sweets) were administratively seized. This store was also immediately suspended due to serious workplace safety violations.

Penalties and further checks on authorisations

Further administrative checks are underway by the Food Police and the Crime Prevention Operational Unit – Urban Decorum and Environment of the Local Police, particularly regarding the permits and rental contracts for the inspected premises.

The business owners were reported for various violations of workplace safety regulations. They were fined €20.671,41 and fined €21.900,00, as reported by the Salerno Public Prosecutor's Office.

I, too, am deeply concerned about public health. It's important that the authorities continue to monitor and punish these violations. Let's hope it doesn't happen again in the future.

It's truly incredible how people can tolerate situations like this; the hygienic conditions are absolutely unacceptable. I wonder how people can run businesses like this without respecting the rules.
