Benevento – A race against time, cold, and snow, culminating in an extreme rescue. On the night of Thursday, January 8, 2026, Carabinieri officers from the San Bartolomeo in Galdo Company (Benevento) rescued an eighty-year-old man suffering from severe hypothermia, lost in a remote forest.

The alarm was raised at 2:55 a.m. at the Carabinieri station, where his anxious wife and son reported the man missing, who had left home around midnight and never returned. Given the freezing temperatures, fears for his safety were immediate.

Under the coordination of Lieutenant Mario Guerra, the Company's acting commander, a team of four soldiers began the search. At 4:20 a.m., in less than two hours, the elderly man was located in a dense forest, about 500 meters from his home, lying on his back and partially buried in snow, in critical condition.

Faced with the impassability of the terrain for any rescue vehicle, the Carabinieri performed a show of strength and dedication: they lifted the man and carried him by hand to the house, braving the thick forest and snow cover.

Once home, while waiting for the 118 ambulance, they performed initial first aid, removing his wet clothing and gradually trying to warm the 80-year-old. The paramedics' intervention then stabilized his condition, preventing further complications.

At the end of the operation, the family publicly expressed their gratitude: heartfelt thanks to the Carabinieri, especially the four soldiers, for their "extraordinary humanity, prompt response, and meticulous search and rescue operation" that prevented the worst.
