Naples is preparing to host an event dedicated to memory, justice, and civic engagement. On Thursday, January 29th, at 6:00 p.m., at the Feltrinelli bookshop in Piazza dei Martiri, "Scacco alla Camorra" (Checkmate to the Camorra), the new book by "Il Mattino" journalist Ciro Formisano, published by Guida Editori, will be presented.

The meeting will be an opportunity to reflect on one of the most dramatic and complex periods in Campania, through the story of a community that decided to rebel against the rule of organized crime. The author will be joined by magistrate Pierpaolo Filippelli, deputy prosecutor in Naples and author of the preface, and regional councilor and former mayor of Ercolano, Ciro Buonajuto, who wrote the afterword.

The book traces the history of Ercolano, a town long suffocated by the presence of clans and the scene of one of the most violent Camorra wars ever recorded in Italy, with a death toll of approximately one hundred in just over twenty years. A bloodbath that seemed destined to never end, until a network of citizens, businessmen, administrators, priests, law enforcement officers, and magistrates began to fight back, building, day after day, a civil front capable of breaking the power structure of the bosses.

"Checkmate to the Camorra is not a book about the Camorra or even about the anti-Camorra movement. It's a book about dreams. About the dream of freedom that united a city," explains Formisano. "It's the story of ordinary people who, united, changed the destiny of a region. It demonstrated that even the most ruthless and bloodthirsty bosses are not invincible."

Through news reports, court documents, images, and firsthand accounts, the book interweaves collective memory and historical reconstruction, even touching on dark pages of Italian history, such as the Via D'Amelio massacre. A story that goes beyond denunciation and seeks to convey the sense of a grassroots civil revolt, capable of transforming a territory scarred by fear into a symbol of resistance and dignity.

This article about the book "Scacco alla Camorra" seems interesting, but I have some doubts. I don't know if this story can truly bring about change; it's a complicated topic and more information is needed. I hope the book helps.
