Fear erupted in Scafati, where a one-year-old child was attacked by the family dog, a pit bull, resulting in facial injuries. The incident occurred a few days ago inside the home. The cause of the attack is still unclear: according to reports, the animal was accustomed to the child's presence.

The child was bitten specifically on his right cheek. The family immediately raised the alarm, and 118 paramedics arrived on the scene, ordering an emergency transfer to Santobono Hospital in Naples, a pediatric referral hospital. The child was hospitalized but is not believed to be in life-threatening condition.

The Carabinieri of the Scafati station are investigating the incident, trying to reconstruct the exact events and understand the reasons for the sudden attack. The dog has since been entrusted to the veterinary service of the Agro Nocerino Sarnese of the Salerno Local Health Authority, as required by procedure.

The incident has reignited the debate on pet safety and management. "Incidents like this raise a question: regulatory intervention is likely needed to establish clearer criteria for the adoption and management of dogs, especially certain breeds, even within the home," said Scafati Mayor Pasquale Aliberti.

Speaking to ANSA, the mayor also expressed the administration's sympathy to the family involved and reiterated "the importance of respecting and enforcing the provisions of the municipal regulations regarding the proper keeping of dogs in public places, to protect both people and the animals themselves."

Frankly, the situation is very worrying and makes me think about how to manage dogs at home. I don't think it's just the dog's fault, but also the person who keeps it. Clearer rules are needed to avoid similar incidents in the future.
