Salerno – A sequence of five earthquakes struck the Gulf of Policastro this morning, on the border between the provinces of Salerno and Potenza. The strongest, with a magnitude of 2.8, was recorded shortly before 9:30 a.m.
According to data collected and published by the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), the seismic swarm unfolded over the course of three hours. The first tremor, faintly felt by some coastal residents, was recorded at 6:33 a.m. with a magnitude of 2.7 and a depth of 10 kilometers.
This was followed by four other earthquakes:
At 7:43 am, magnitude 1.9 (depth 10 km)
At 9:17 am, magnitude 1.8 (depth 10 km)
At 9:32 am, magnitude 2.8 (depth 11 km) – the most energetic
At 9:50 am, magnitude 2.2 (depth 14 km)
No damage, but concern among citizens
The tremors, although felt in some coastal areas, did not cause damage to people, buildings, or infrastructure. Several reports were received by the local civil defense, especially following the 9:32 a.m. earthquake, but these were mostly requests for reassurance.

"This is normal seismic activity for this area of the Tyrrhenian Sea, known for widespread seismicity and often swarming," said an INGV seismologist contacted by our editorial staff. "The very shallow depths, between 10 and 14 kilometers, can facilitate the perception of even low-magnitude events like these, but the energy values involved are extremely low and do not indicate any worrying anomalies."
The Gulf of Policastro area has historically been subject to similar swarms, which typically dissipate within hours or days without evolving into more intense events. Monitoring agencies continue to monitor the situation.

It's interesting to see how the seismic shocks are occurring in this area of the Gulf of Policastro, even though there hasn't been any serious damage. People are always a little worried when there are earthquakes, but that seems normal.
