A massive deployment of police forces stormed the Porta Nolana area of Naples yesterday morning to stamp out the phenomenon of illegal markets that have long transformed the neighborhood into a vast illegal bazaar.
The operation, an extraordinary territorial control service commissioned by the Police Headquarters, saw the State Police on the front lines, with officers from the Vicariate-Mercato Police Station and the Anti-Crime Division, supported by the Guardia di Finanza, the Italian Army, and operators from ASIA.
The raid focused on those streets—Corso Garibaldi, Via Nolana, Via Marvasi, and Via Caracciolo di Bella—where the "load" of violated ordinances is heaviest and illegal sales are replacing legal ones. The result was the seizure of approximately twenty thousand kilos (20 quintals) of merchandise of all kinds, displayed and sold in violation of all regulations.
Thanks to the immediate intervention of ASIA personnel, who used a compactor, the enormous quantity of waste was disposed of on-site. This action allowed the streets to be physically "cleaned" and public spaces that had previously been illegally occupied to be returned to the community, thus restoring legality and urban decorum.

This raid is certainly a step in the right direction, but it's also important to consider the social and economic reasons that drive people to sell illegally. We need to find a balance.
Even though the operation took a lot of merchandise, I wonder if it's enough to stop the phenomenon. People continue to sell, and more long-lasting solutions are needed.
The police intervention in Porta Nolana was an important step in trying to resolve the problem of illegal markets that have long plagued the neighborhood. I hope there will be more similar operations in the future.
