Sorrento – A night of violence and unrest in the heart of Sorrento ended with the arrest of a 26-year-old from Meta, charged with resisting arrest and assaulting a public official. The outcome is one injured soldier and the timely intervention of several civilians, who stood idly by as the attack unfolded.
The assault and the attempted escape
The incident occurred during a Carabinieri patrol from the local company. While patrolling the central Piazza Angelina Lauro, the officers noticed a man in a clearly altered state, likely under the influence of alcohol. The young man was yelling violently at his partner, an 18-year-old girl, and forcefully grabbing her in front of passersby.
Upon seeing the uniform, the 26-year-old showed no signs of calming down, instead deciding to flee on foot through the surrounding streets. The run lasted only moments: the Carabinieri quickly caught up with him, but the young man reacted with extreme aggression to avoid being arrested.
The fight and the support of passers-by
A fierce struggle ensued, during which the 26-year-old attempted to break free, striking officers. At this point, the civic-mindedness of some citizens present in the square emerged, and they physically intervened to support the officers in restraining the young man.
Thanks to the joint maneuver, the man was finally subdued and arrested. One of the Carabinieri officers was the one who fared the worst, suffering injuries deemed curable with a prognosis of five days.
The bitter side
Despite the violence she suffered and her fear, the attacker's young partner has chosen, for the time being, not to file a complaint against the 26-year-old. The arrested man is now at the disposal of the judicial authorities to answer for the violence he inflicted on law enforcement officers.
