Gunshots hit the twelfth floor of Tower C of the Palace of Justice in Naples, home to the Attorney General's Office, on January 2nd. The incident, described as cowardly and violent by officials, immediately sparked reactions of condemnation and solidarity.
"We learned from the press about the incident at the Palace of Justice in Naples, a place that, in protecting rights, represents our Constitution. We know with certainty that the investigators will shed full light on this vile and violent act," declared Don Tonino Palmese, president of the Pol.is Foundation of the Campania Region. "Prosecutor General Aldo Policastro is a friend of the innocent victims and has always supported our Foundation. Thanks to his commitment and that of President Covelli, we were able to create the Listening Space dedicated to victims, a fundamental step in the full recognition of victims' rights in criminal proceedings. With this statement, we wish to express our deepest sympathy and solidarity with the Attorney General, all the magistrates, and all the workers at the Palace of Justice."
The Executive Committee of the National Association of Magistrates of the Naples District strongly condemns the incident. It "expresses its full solidarity with the magistrates, judicial staff, and all those who work daily in the service of justice, hoping that the competent authorities will shed full light on the incident as quickly as possible." The ANM also emphasizes the need to strengthen security measures in its offices and warns of the risk that the climate of delegitimization of the Judiciary could encourage violent or improvised acts against the institution and its symbols.
