Avellino — The first "social taxi" has been launched in Alta Irpinia, designed for elderly people with mobility difficulties who need to reach healthcare facilities for regular care. The initiative, involving 25 municipalities in the province of Avellino, aims to fill a healthcare gap in an area characterized by significant geographic dispersion and a growing elderly population.

The service is primarily intended for people over 65 without family members, suffering from chronic conditions that require regular visits and treatment at hospitals and clinics. Operational management is entrusted to the Misericordia di Torella dei Lombardi, which will operate according to specific regulations approved by the City of Alta Irpinia.

A complex and ageing territory

"The reasons for the initiative are clear," explains Rosanna Repole, president of the Città dell'Alta Irpinia. "The number of people over 65 and the distance between municipalities and healthcare facilities make this type of intervention indispensable." The president emphasized that the goal is to provide concrete solutions to a mountainous area where access to healthcare services often poses a barrier for those who live alone.

The trial begins with the hope of transforming, if the results are positive, into a stable and structured service. The project represents a model of local welfare that could be replicated in other inland areas of Campania struggling with the same challenges of demographic aging and geographic isolation.
