Pompeii – Late yesterday afternoon, officers from the Pompeii State Police Station executed a precautionary measure requiring him to remain in his municipality of residence, issued by the Preliminary Investigations Judge of the Torre Annunziata Court at the request of the Public Prosecutor's Office. The measure concerns a person seriously suspected of the crime of attempted arson.
The night raid in front of the commercial establishment
According to investigators' reconstruction, the events date back to the night of December 6, 2025. The suspect, who arrived in Pompeii in a car with a currently unidentified accomplice, allegedly doused the perimeter awning of a commercial establishment with flammable liquid, then set it on fire. The flames spread rapidly, affecting part of the shop's external awning.
The author hit by the flames and escaped
During the act, the perpetrator himself was reportedly caught in the flames, forcing him to hastily flee the scene. The fire, after initially spreading, extinguished itself spontaneously, avoiding more serious consequences.
The danger to people and the structure
The incident, however, could have had far more dramatic consequences. Investigators emphasize that, due to the significant amount of flammable liquid spilled and the presence of highly combustible materials inside the business, particularly firewood intended for use in an oven, the fire could have spread, endangering an undetermined number of people.
Investigations and identification of the suspect
The investigation, initiated following the complaint and coordinated by the Public Prosecutor's Office, allowed the reconstruction of the incident thanks to the acquisition and analysis of images from video surveillance systems in the area, as well as further investigations. These findings led to the identification, with a high probability, of the current suspect as the perpetrator of the attempted arson.

The Pompeii incident shows how criminality can be dangerous for the community. But we must also ask whether preventive measures were taken. It's unclear why the perpetrator wasn't stopped before he acted.
