He attempted to pull off a classic scam by posing as a law enforcement officer, but the plan was foiled thanks to the victim's prompt action and the intervention of the State Police. An 18-year-old man, resident in the province of Naples and with no criminal record, was charged at liberty with attempted aggravated fraud against an elderly person.

The incident occurred in Salerno, where an 84-year-old man received a phone call from a self-proclaimed police officer. In an alarming tone, the caller led him to believe he was the owner of a car involved in property crimes. To avoid alleged legal consequences and a house search, the elderly man was supposed to hand over his money and valuables to an officer who would be arriving shortly to check on him.

Suspicious, the man contacted 113, allowing investigators from the Flying Squad to intervene immediately. Officers located and arrested the young man near the victim's home, just as he was preparing to act as "collector." Further investigation revealed that the 18-year-old had been sent to the scene by accomplices with the task of securing the elderly man's belongings.

The boy was taken to the police station, reported, and the Municipality of Salerno also issued him a mandatory expulsion order, a preventative measure ordered by the police commissioner.

Salerno Police Chief Giancarlo Conticchio intervened in the incident, making a clear appeal to the public, especially the most vulnerable: "Citizens, especially the elderly, are advised to always call the Emergency Number 112 in the event of suspicious situations or unusual requests, as it represents a cornerstone of safety and the most immediate and effective way to receive assistance and protection from the police."

With a police baton in hand and the authoritative air of someone wearing a uniform he'd never worn, a 37-year-old man prowled between Villa Literno and Castel Volturno, stopping cars along the most isolated roads. Posing as a member of the police force, he stopped motorists and, under the false pretense of a stop, subjected them to arbitrary searches. In one instance, he didn't hesitate to violently strike one of his victims in the face to get what he wanted.

His favorite target was foreigners, people who - he believed - would be more afraid or difficult to report the incident. A strategy that allowed him to steal money, cell phones and personal documents for months, creating a climate of terror among those who happened to be circulating in those areas.

It's important for older people to be wary of these types of scams, which happen frequently. The good news is that the victim notified the police before losing money and valuables, so they should always be vigilant.
