Naples – State Police responded swiftly to an attempted robbery in the city center. Yesterday evening, January 19, 2026, officers from the General Prevention Office – Public Aid and the Campania Crime Prevention Unit arrested a 35-year-old Algerian national, already known to law enforcement, for attempted aggravated robbery, resisting arrest, and assaulting a public official.
While patrolling Corso Umberto I, the officers heard a man screaming for help. They identified the 35-year-old man, armed with a gun, who was trying to snatch the victim's cell phone.
Upon seeing the uniforms, the man attempted to flee on foot. The officers chased him and caught up with him on Via Marvasi, where—after a struggle—they subdued him. The weapon turned out to be an airsoft pistol without the mandatory red cap, a circumstance that further aggravated the arrested man's situation.
The 35-year-old was taken to prison pending a summary hearing. The victim was able to recover the phone and filed a formal complaint. The intervention prevented theft and restored calm to one of the city's busiest streets.
