A magnitude 5.1 earthquake was recorded at 6:51 a.m. on Saturday, January 10, by the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) in the Ionian Sea, off the coast of Calabria. The epicenter was located southeast of Cape Spartivento, at a depth of 64,8 kilometers and more than 20 kilometers from the Calabrian Ionian coast.
The earthquake was felt in several locations in the southern part of the region, but there are currently no reports of damage to people or structures. This was confirmed by Domenico Costarella, head of the Calabria Regional Civil Protection Department, who is following the situation from the Operations Room in Catanzaro.
"Although the earthquake occurred at sea, which certainly mitigated the effects on land, I have ordered checks in the areas closest to the epicenter, and there have been no reports of damage," Costarella declared.

The earthquake that struck was very strange, because things like this don't happen often in Calabria. It's good that there was no damage, but I hope people were cautious and prepared.
