Naples – The new year begins in tragic fashion on the streets of Naples, marked by a long, growing trail of blood. The first victim of 2026 is Giuseppe Cafiero, 63, a Neapolitan, who died after ten days in intensive care at the Ospedale del Mare following a tragic accident at dawn on December 26th outside the Fuorigrotta tunnel.

Cafiero, a professional security guard and esteemed musician, was struck and crushed by a pileup of cars while he was near Piazzale Tecchio. His death refocuses attention on the city's road safety crisis, where pedestrians and motorists continue to pay a heavy price.

A life shattered at dawn

Giuseppe Cafiero was on his way to work for his morning shift. He had parked near Piazzale Tecchio, a few steps from the sidewalk, to stop for a coffee before heading to his service station in the Via Manzoni area. At that moment, a Volkswagen Polo driven by a 21-year-old Neapolitan woman, coming from the Claudio underpass, suddenly lost control.

According to initial reconstructions, the car was traveling at high speed: it struck three parked vehicles, which, pushed against each other, struck the 63-year-old man without leaving him any chance of escape. Cafiero was crushed between the crumpled wreckage.

The 118 crew rescued him and rushed him first to the San Paolo Hospital and then to the Ospedale del Mare. His condition immediately appeared desperate. Despite delicate surgery and a ten-day battle between life and death, Giuseppe Cafiero died: the crush injuries, particularly to the chest, were too severe.

The pain of the family

The victim leaves behind a wife, two daughters, and his ex-wife, with whom he had maintained a relationship of deep respect over the years. He was a man described by all as reserved, serious, and passionate.

"Pino Cafiero was a great drummer, he played with bands nationwide, and he was a good person," his brother Ernesto said in an interview with the newspaper Il Mattino, remembering not only the musician, but above all the man.

The investigations and the high-speed hypothesis

The 63-year-old's death has further aggravated the situation of the young woman driving the Polo, who is now formally under investigation for vehicular homicide. The investigation is being conducted by the Naples Municipal Police, who have acquired footage from surveillance cameras in the area.

The high speed is one of the key factors being examined by investigators, who are assessing whether the loss of control of the vehicle was caused by a speed limit violation. Toxicology tests were also performed on the 21-year-old and all vehicles involved were seized.

The operations at the accident site were coordinated by the Territorial Operations Center led by Lucio Sarnacchiaro, with the intervention of the Chiaia Operations Unit led by Bruno Capuano, under the overall coordination of Commander Ciro Esposito.

A road already marked by too many accidents

The Claudio underpass and the Fuorigrotta area are once again at the center of controversy. Residents and operators have long been calling for the installation of speed bumps and structural improvements to reduce the danger on a stretch of road that has already been the site of numerous accidents.

Giuseppe Cafiero's death isn't just a personal and family tragedy, it's yet another wake-up call for a city that continues to see too many road deaths. A silent massacre that, even in the new year, shows no signs of abating.

This is a very tragic and sad situation happening in Naples, with many people losing their lives in road accidents. It's important that something be done to improve road safety, especially in areas where there have already been many accidents.
