The conviction of a 38-year-old Neapolitan man for the "fake carabiniere" scam in Sondrio has refocused attention on an increasingly widespread phenomenon affecting the most vulnerable segments of the population, highlighting the importance of prevention and awareness strategies to protect the elderly.

Sondrio – The case of the so-called "fake Carabiniere" scam that took place in Valtellina in October 2022 has ended with a conviction. The Sondrio Court found Antonio Guida, 38, a resident of Naples, guilty of aggravated fraud against a woman over eighty.

According to the court's reconstruction, the man—a "traveler" from Campania—performed a tried-and-true scam: a phone call to the victim, during which an accomplice pretended to be a Carabinieri officer, falsely announcing his son's arrest and suggesting immediate payment to avoid worsening consequences.

Distraught and anxious, the woman handed over €3.000 in cash and several gold jewels to the man who, identified as Guida, showed up at her home shortly thereafter to collect them.

Judge Giulia Estorelli sentenced the defendant to one year, four months, and twenty days in prison, along with a €700 fine and court costs. The sentence was reduced by a third thanks to the expedited trial procedure.
