Verbania – A ruthless hoax, based on an elderly mother's deepest fears, cost an 88-year-old woman from the Ossola Valley her entire family fortune in gold jewelry. However, the Carabinieri of the Verbania Investigative Unit have managed to identify one of the alleged perpetrators: a 30-year-old man, resident in Melito di Napoli, now subject to the mandatory residence order.
The "fake Carabiniere" scam dates back to last October, when the victim was contacted by an accomplice of the thirty-year-old. The caller, posing as a member of the Carabiniere, terrified the elderly woman with shocking news: "Your daughter caused a serious car accident. Money is needed immediately to avoid her arrest."
A few minutes after the phone call, while the woman was still in a state of shock, the 30-year-old man showed up at the door. Believing he was helping his daughter in distress, the 88-year-old handed over approximately 270 grams of jewelry, estimated to be worth over €37,000, to the suspect.
The investigations: The work of the Provincial Command investigators, based on technical analysis and witness testimony, has helped narrow the investigation around the thirty-year-old from Campania. Despite this initial important result, the investigation isn't over: the Carabinieri are working to identify the "telephonist," the mastermind behind the scam who coordinated the robbery by phone.

The article tells a very sad and unfortunate story for that elderly woman. It's incredible how people can take advantage of the vulnerability of others, especially the most vulnerable. I hope justice is served.
