The Carabinieri of the Ortisei station, in collaboration with the Acerra military, have reported a 20-year-old resident of the province of Naples, believed to be responsible for a telephone scam targeting an elderly woman living in Val Gardena.
The investigation began with a complaint filed by the victim, a woman in her seventies who reported being contacted by a man falsely claiming to be an employee of her bank.
During the conversation, the so-called bank official had alarmed the elderly woman by mentioning the existence of an alleged suspicious transfer in the amount of €2.490, leading her to believe that a fraudulent transaction was underway on her account.
Under the pretext of blocking the anomalous transaction, the caller managed to convince the woman to provide her account credentials. Once in possession of the credentials, the scammer arranged a much larger transfer, amounting to €19.900, to himself.
Thanks to a thorough analysis of the financial flows and the review of bank records, the Carabinieri were able to identify the bank account where the funds were being diverted, which was registered to the young man from Campania. Based on the information gathered, and by order of the competent judicial authority, the account was immediately frozen in order to recover the stolen funds.
After completing the formal procedures, the 20-year-old was charged with fraud. The incident is part of a broader phenomenon of telephone fraud targeting vulnerable groups in the population, for which the Carabinieri reiterate their call for extreme caution and never to share personal or banking information with unverified individuals.

I hope the young man is severely punished for what he did. It's important to educate people, especially the elderly, about how to recognize phone scams and protect themselves.
It's truly unacceptable that these things are still happening in 2023. Authorities should do more to protect the elderly and stop scammers before it's too late.
It's a bit sad that there are people who defraud elderly people. I think it should be easier to prevent these incidents, but there are always the same dishonest people who exploit their vulnerability.
