Como – A lightning-fast scam targeting an elderly woman was foiled yesterday morning by Como police, who arrested two Neapolitans specializing in the fake carabiniere technique.

Alerted by several reports, officers from the Flying Squad spotted a suspicious rental car coming from the province of Naples and followed it with several plainclothes crews throughout the city and its hinterland.

The police monitored the vehicle's every movement until they intercepted the criminal activity on Viale Masia, in the Como capital. There, while the lookout—a 52-year-old Neapolitan resident in Milan and already under house arrest—waited in his car, his 51-year-old accomplice, posing as a Carabinieri officer, rang the intercom and entered the apartment of a 75-year-old woman.

A few minutes later he left with the stolen goods: approximately €8.500 in cash, gold jewelry, and a fake police ID card.

Trapped outside the victim's home, the scammer was arrested red-handed. The lookout, seeing himself discovered, attempted to flee but was apprehended; he was also charged with resisting a public officer. The money and jewelry, immediately returned to the 75-year-old woman who had already filed a complaint, complete the case against two individuals with criminal records.

The accomplices—a 51-year-old resident of Naples and a 52-year-old from Milan—were transferred to Como prison on charges of aggravated fraud, as announced by the Police Headquarters in an official statement.

As always, it's newsworthy that they are two Neapolitans. Then they are two Paduans or other citizens, as can be seen from a note, defrauded by two crooked fixers.

Neapolitans when they are Neapolitans, Italians when they are from the North, may God curse those who commit acts against defenseless people.

Massimo Cardinale, I don't think it's appropriate to defend certain people. Also, to be honest, I haven't read any news of scams targeting elderly people perpetrated by people outside of Naples yet.

What happened in Como was a terrible thing. I hope the police continue to do their job and that the scammers are properly punished. Elderly people deserve to be protected from these truly unpleasant and unpleasant situations.
