Moments of terror erupted in the heart of Vomero, one of Naples' busiest residential neighborhoods. Shortly after midnight on Thursday, January 8, 2026, a cornice broke off from a building on Via Vincenzo d'Annibale, a stone's throw from Piazza Bernini and Piazza degli Artisti, spilling a mass of debris onto the asphalt and sidewalk.
The collapse occurred right outside the historic "Condurro" pizzeria, as customers were leaving the restaurant after dinner. Only a fortunate coincidence prevented a massacre: no one was injured, but passersby watched helplessly as debris smashed the windshields and bodywork of at least two parked cars.
Law enforcement officers intervened promptly to cordon off the area and prevent further risks. Investigations are ongoing into the building's structural condition, amid ongoing concerns about structural deterioration in the Vomero neighborhood, where similar incidents have occurred in the past due to lack of maintenance.

It's incredible that such a collapse could happen, especially in an area like Vomero. I wonder how the authorities aren't properly monitoring the buildings; there have been similar problems before.
