An attempted scam involving twenty thousand euros was foiled yesterday in Avellino thanks to the timely intervention of the State PoliceThe intended victim was a 96-year-old woman living in the Mazzini district, who had been contacted by phone by a person pretending to be her nephew in financial difficulty. The terrifying story was used to convince the elderly woman to hand over the cash, which was needed "to help her daughter," who lives outside the province.

The agents of the Avellino Police HeadquartersAlerted by the woman's family via 113, they intercepted and detained two men, aged 23 and 37, residents of the province of Naples, near the 96-year-old's home. The two, caught preparing to withdraw the money, were arrested and transferred to prison.

Investigations are continuing to identify the third person involved, the so-called "telephone operator," who contacted the elderly woman to carry out the scam. The incident highlights the police's vigilance and responsiveness, but also the vulnerability of the elderly to sophisticated telephone scams.
