Vietri sul Mare – A breath of fresh air for the Divine Coast's road system. Just days after the landslide that paralyzed traffic, the stretch of the Amalfi Coast State Road 163 between Vietri sul Mare and Cetara officially reopens today, Sunday, February 15, at 5:00 PM.
Road traffic will be restored along the inside lane, regulated by an alternating one-way system.
Technology at the service of safety
The decision to reopen the vital artery for the area came after intensive monitoring and analysis. Experts, led by engineer Gabriele Petroccelli, used cutting-edge technologies such as laser scanners and drones to map the condition of the rocky ridge.
According to the geomorphological compatibility assessment, no evidence of widespread instability or deep fractures was detected. The critical issues, although present, are localized to the surface layers of the soil, thus allowing the partial return of vehicles to safety.
An intervention in less than 36 hours
Local officials expressed satisfaction with the swift response. "We managed to minimize disruption to residents and commuters by reopening the SS163 within 36 hours of Thursday's event," said Giovanni De Simone, Mayor of Vietri sul Mare, and Fortunato Della Monica, President of the Conference of Mayors of the Amalfi Coast, in a joint statement.
Safety works
Despite the restoration of traffic, the alert remains high. The one-way system will remain in effect pending the completion of urgent and unavoidable hydrogeological interventions. The work will involve strengthening the rocky ridge, both downstream and upstream of the roadway, to ensure the final stabilization of the area affected by the landslide.

The reopening of the Amalfi Coast Highway 163 is good news, but I'm worried about safety, even though they say everything is fine. I hope there aren't any more landslides in the future and that the work is done properly.
