Avellino – A scam targeting an eighty-year-old woman was foiled in extremis: Carabinieri from the Andretta station in the Avellino area arrested a twenty-year-old Neapolitan man caught red-handed.
The script of the fake accident
Late yesterday afternoon, the scammer activated the classic "son scam" scheme: he called the victim, posing as a lawyer, and told her about a serious car accident that had happened to her son. To "cover urgent expenses," he announced that a Carabinieri marshal would arrive to collect the money and valuables.
The lightning intervention of the Carabinieri
Shortly thereafter, the young man showed up at the elderly woman's home and managed to secure €6.000 in cash. The operation was interrupted by the timely intervention of the real Carabinieri, alerted by a report to 112 providing precise details about the suspect's car. The officers intercepted the vehicle, stopped the 20-year-old, and recovered all the stolen goods, which were promptly returned to their rightful owner.
Investigations underway into accomplices and other robberies
Investigations are underway to identify any accomplices and determine the boy's responsibility for similar incidents. The arrest is part of enhanced local enforcement efforts to combat scams targeting the elderly, an increasingly widespread problem in Irpinia.

It's incredible how people try to defraud the elderly, especially during a time when they are already vulnerable. More should be done to protect them from similar situations.
