He had listed a tractor engine online at an attractive price, attracting the interest of a buyer from the province of Avellino. But behind that ad lay a carefully crafted scam. It was discovered by the Carabinieri of the Aquilonia station, who, after completing their investigation, reported the incident to a young man originally from Sardinia.
The victim, convinced of the deal's merits, contacted the alleged seller and agreed to the purchase, paying a deposit of approximately €4.200 via bank transfer. After collecting the money, however, the scammer disappeared, cutting off all communication and disappearing.
Realizing he'd been scammed, the man contacted the Carabinieri, who began an investigation based on online traces and money movements. The investigation led to the identity of the perpetrator, who has now been charged with fraud.
The incident refocuses attention on the risks associated with online purchases, especially when expensive goods are sold privately and without direct guarantees. Law enforcement officials always recommend extreme caution and urge customers to carefully check the reliability of sellers before making advance payments.
