Caivano – It's 7:30 PM when the operations center of the Caivano Carabinieri Company receives a frantic call: "He attempted to kidnap a child."
Within minutes, a patrol reached the Md supermarket on Via Atellana. The military gathered initial statements from the owner, employees, and customers present, then acquired video surveillance footage to reconstruct the incident.
The attack at the exit of the market
Investigations revealed that two women, both with children—aged 5 and 8—were leaving the store after shopping. At the entrance, in front of the sliding door, a 45-year-old Ghanaian man with a criminal record, visibly intoxicated and in the company of two other people, approached.
He points to the youngest child and says to his mother, "This isn't your son, give him to me." The woman, initially disoriented, doesn't understand the gravity of the situation as the child moves in front of the door. The man then tries to lift him; the mother's friend steps in his way, but he persists, trying to grab the child.
The screams, the escape and the terror of the family
The child screams "Mommy!" and his mother drags him inside the supermarket, behind the checkout counter. The attacker follows her and tries to grab him again. A cashier steps in to shield him.
At that point, the 45-year-old gave up and fled the market. The child's father arrived outside in a car. The woman, shocked, got in, unable to explain what had happened. Only later, at home, did she tearfully recount those moments to the Carabinieri, who had already reviewed the footage.
The arrest shortly after near the supermarket
The officers located the man still in the vicinity of the store and arrested him. He was taken to prison and charged with attempted kidnapping.
A story whose dynamics and context echo similar national news stories in recent years, especially what happened in Bergamo just a few days ago.

I don't understand how something like this could happen in a supermarket, where there are many people. It's strange that no one immediately did anything to stop the man, but perhaps he was too confused.
