They attempted to circulate counterfeit banknotes at a business in Montoro, in the province of Avellino, but the attempt was thwarted by the prompt intervention of the shop owner and the rapid intervention of the Carabinieri. The operation resulted in one arrest and two charges of spending and introducing counterfeit currency into the country.

According to the Carabinieri's reconstruction, the three appeared at the cash register attempting to pay with counterfeit 50-euro bills. The shopkeeper, suspicious of the appearance of the money, reacted immediately, managing to stall for time and raise the alarm. The arrival of the Carabinieri prevented the scam from succeeding.

During the subsequent search, officers found and seized additional counterfeit banknotes totaling €950. In addition to the counterfeit money, they also found burglary tools and altered keys, elements that have aggravated the suspects' situation and which will now be the subject of further investigation.

A 40-year-old resident of Altavilla Irpina was arrested and taken to prison, while the other two involved, a man and a woman living in the province of Naples, were charged at large. Investigations are continuing to determine the possible source of the counterfeit banknotes and verify possible connections to other similar incidents in the area.

I read about the Montoro incident and it seems strange to me how people could think of using counterfeit banknotes in a store. It's important that the owner was careful and that the Carabinieri arrived in time to stop them.
