A Porsche Macan with San Marino license plates, parked in Piazza Municipio, attracted the attention of a Carabinieri patrol from the PMZ Centro. The tinted windows and the presence of multiple people on board also aroused the officers' suspicions.
The Carabinieri approached and asked the occupants to get out of the car. Behind the wheel was a 24-year-old man from San Marino, identified as a professional cyclist. With him was a 23-year-old man; in the back seat, noticed only later, was a third man curled up asleep.
The crack and the piece of newspaper
The situation remained calm until one of the soldiers noticed a small crack under the steering box with a fragment of newspaper stuck in it: a detail considered unusual for that part of the passenger compartment.
The discovery: all 20 euro banknotes were counterfeit.
After carefully removing the plastic, the Carabinieri found a hidden package. Inside were €2.000 in €20 bills, which were found to be counterfeit. The 24-year-old Sammarinese was arrested.

The article talks about a Porsche that was stopped by the Carabinieri, but I don't understand why there were counterfeit bills. Perhaps the most important thing is to understand how these people managed to do all this without being noticed.
