ROME – The Ministry of Health has ordered the immediate dispatch of inspectors to both Bolzano and Naples following the incident involving the heart intended for little Tommaso's transplant. The decision, signed as soon as the news reached Rome, aims to shed full light on the entire operational chain, from organ removal to transfer.
In particular, what happened to theBolzano hospital, where the heart was removed before being assigned for transplant to the child admitted to theMonaldi Hospital of Naples. The inspectors will have to reconstruct the timing, methods, and responsibilities, verifying whether there were any irregularities or errors in the established procedures.
At the heart of the investigation is the organ's transportation, which, according to initial reports, was carried out using dry ice instead of traditional ice, a circumstance that may have compromised the heart's integrity. This technical detail, if confirmed, would be crucial in reconstructing the facts and identifying any critical issues.
The aim of the ministerial inspection is to clarify whether national transplant guidelines were followed and whether the organ storage and transfer conditions were adequate. This is a crucial step not only to determine any liability, but also to safeguard trust in the transplant system, which is based on rigorous protocols and extremely sensitive timelines.

It's important for the Ministry of Health to investigate this case, but I'm concerned about how transplants are handled in Italy. Hearts must be preserved properly and transported correctly.
