Massa Lubrense – The skipper who caused the death of the American tourist off the Furore Fjord has been arrested.
The doors of Poggioreale prison have opened for Elio Persico, the 32-year-old who on August 4, 2023, was driving the gozzo that collided with the sailing vessel Tortuga.
Persico, on trial at the Salerno court, had pleaded guilty last November to a sentence of 4 years and 9 months in prison. Once his sentence became final, he was sent to prison.
Adrienne Vaughan, 45, a manager at Bloomsbury Publishing, which published the Harry Potter books, lost her life in the accident. She was vacationing on the Amalfi Coast with her husband and two children and attending a wedding reception on the sailing vessel when the gozzo, piloted by Persico, collided with the Tortuga.
The violent impact caused the American tourist to fall into the water, where she was struck by the boat's propeller and died.
Persico, charged with manslaughter, was under the influence of alcohol and drugs.
The Salerno court issued a detention order, notified yesterday, against the skipper from Massa Lubrense, who will serve a sentence of 4 years and nine months in prison.
