Salerno – A picture of hygienic and structural degradation emerged from the latest operation by the Carabinieri of the Salerno Anti-Adulteration and Health Unit (NAS). The inspections, intensified between the capital and the Sele Plain, led to the immediate suspension of operations at two ethnic restaurants, found to be in conditions far below minimum food safety standards.

salerno

The irregularities discovered by the military, assisted by staff from the Salerno Local Health Authority, reveal an uncontrolled management of the premises. In one of the businesses, a raw space was simultaneously used as a food storage area and a waste storage area.

Furthermore, inspections revealed several refrigerators malfunctioning, a lack of pest control measures, and widespread deficiencies in routine cleaning.

The changing room-garage and the “ghost” food

A paradoxical situation arose in the staff locker rooms, where bicycles and scooters used by employees for transportation were found among the uniforms. In addition to the structural deficiencies, a major food safety issue emerged: the Carabinieri seized 1,4 tons of goods. Among the fish, meat, poultry, and baked goods, none were accompanied by the necessary documents to ensure their traceability.

Sanctions and suspension of activities

The operation resulted in administrative fines totaling €5.500 and the closure of the premises. The two restaurants will remain closed indefinitely: reopening will be permitted only after sanitary conditions have been restored and a new, rigorous inspection by the health authority.
