A Saturday evening that was supposed to be a carefree celebration turned tragic, leaving two entire communities in despair. Maurizio Cortellessa, a 56-year-old native of Vairano Patenora but a longtime resident of Venafro, a respected Guardia di Finanza non-commissioned officer serving in Isernia, lost his life in a terrible car accident on Provincial Road 85.
The dynamics: the journey to the concert
The accident occurred on Saturday evening, Valentine's Day. Cortellessa was traveling with his wife toward Isernia: the couple was expected at the city's Auditorium to attend a concert.
At the Capriati al Volturno exit, for reasons still under investigation, the finance officer's car collided violently with another car. The impact was devastating.
The emergency response team was activated immediately: Carabinieri patrol cars, several 118 ambulances, and a firefighter team arrived on the scene. Firefighters worked frantically to extract the bodies from the twisted wreckage of the vehicles, but the situation immediately appeared desperate for the 56-year-old. Unconscious when rescuers arrived, Cortellessa died shortly thereafter, rendering all attempts at resuscitation futile while he was being transported to the hospital.
The number of injured and the investigations
While the loss of the petty officer is being mourned, serious concerns remain for his wife. The woman, extracted alive from the cockpit, was rushed to the Ferdinando Veneziale Hospital in Isernia, where she remains in serious condition; doctors have assessed her condition as serious.
The conditions of the driver of the other vehicle involved, currently hospitalized in the orthopedic department of the same hospital, are less worrying.
The judicial authorities have ordered an autopsy on Cortellessa's body, which could provide further details to clarify the dynamics of the accident, which is currently under strict confidentiality.
