Naples – A moved crowd, tearful applause, and a mournful silence accompanied the final farewell to Jlenia Musella, the 22-year-old murdered in Ponticelli in the late afternoon of February 4th. The funeral took place in the Church of the Holy Family in the Luzzatti district, the family's hometown before moving to the Conocal district, the scene of the crime.
The crowded church and the white coffin
Dozens of friends, relatives, and acquaintances crowded the church and the square outside. Jlenia's smiling face graced the white T-shirts worn by her friends, with loving phrases: "Elsewhere, but together," "You will always be the most beautiful star for us to gaze upon."
The white coffin, greeted by prolonged applause, was never left alone: from its entrance into the church until the end of the ceremony, it was surrounded by the embrace of family members, starting with the grief-stricken mother.
The priest's words: "A tragedy that concerns everyone."
The priest, Don Federico, was visibly tired and struggled to find the words during the homily.
"This is a tragedy that affects young people," he said. "When such a young life is cut short, the Church, society, and adults must question themselves. I wish funerals for young people who die tragically were no longer held."
Then the thought directed to Jlenia: “Your name weighs on our lips, because it hurts to say it.”
The funeral poster and the controversies
The funeral announcement sparked discussion, as it included, among those announcing the young woman's death, the name of her brother Giuseppe, now detained on charges of having killed her.
Meanwhile, outside the church, all the people who couldn't get in had gathered. Many watched the ceremony from the balconies of the surrounding buildings.
Balloons, fireworks and the final farewell
After the funeral, the coffin left the square amid white balloons and letters with Jlenia's name floating in the sky. Fireworks exploded in the background, marking a farewell that divided public opinion between emotion and sadness.
