Torre del Greco – The sidewalks near the historic center of Torre del Greco were becoming an illegal dumping ground for inert materials and hazardous waste.

This eco-criminal act was ignored by the increased enforcement ordered by the municipal administration, led by Mayor Luigi Mennella and coordinated by Gennaro Russo's municipal police command.

Officers from the Economic Activities, Environment, and Ecology Unit, led by Lieutenant Giuliana Lorenzi, arrested two individuals engaged in illegal dumping in the area not far from the port. Both were charged with waste disposal.

The electronic eye frames the first responsible

The operations were concentrated yesterday, Friday, February 6th. The first raid targeted the Corso Garibaldi area, where video surveillance cameras played a crucial role. The surveillance camera captured a man getting out of a van and "freely" depositing a dozen black bags on the sidewalk.

After recovering the vehicle's license plate, the officers went to the scene and found that the bags contained waste and debris from sawmill work, as well as various inert materials such as rubber belts.

The driver of the vehicle was located a short distance from the site of the abandonment: he is a 32-year-old, identified and reported after comparing the images with the video surveillance system.

Intensified controls throughout the territory

The operation is part of a plan of tight controls that has affected the entire city of Torre del Greco in recent weeks. This systematic action against environmental degradation and illegal dumping aims to restore decency to the municipal territory and crack down on those who turn the city streets into illegal dumps for hazardous waste.

It's right that waste inspections are carried out, but I think fines aren't enough to stop certain people. There should be more penalties and community service for those who abandon waste on the streets, not just reports.
