Afragola – Students in Afragola are struggling with buses that don't run or don't take them to their destinations. The chronic problem of transportation to the city's four comprehensive schools was the focus of a meeting convened this morning by the Prefect of Naples, Michele di Bari.
A silent emergency, that of local public transport, which risks isolating entire areas of the municipality right around school entry and exit times.
The Special Commissioner of the Municipality of Afragola, Fernando Mone, and a representative of the Metropolitan City took part in the discussion. The meeting was intended to clarify a paradox: the current routes, in fact, seem designed more for long-distance commuters than for the local school population, limiting themselves to connecting the Naples Piazza Garibaldi station with the Afragola high-speed train station.
A service to be "tailored" to the needs of schools
The participants' analysis highlighted a clear disproportion between the transportation offerings and the actual needs of students. Therefore, a clear and shared course of action emerged from the meeting. The goal is to strengthen the network by leveraging existing resources.
The proposal under consideration involves expanding the existing routes: the possibility of adding additional stops for those public transport lines that already pass through neighboring municipalities is being explored, diverting or extending their routes to bridge the gaps in the Afragola area. Furthermore, the possibility of increasing service on routes already under agreement with the municipality will also be explored.
Towards a mapping of needs
But to avoid one-off interventions, the technical committee will not stop at this initial meeting. The next stage will be more operational and strategic. The involved entities will work on a detailed mapping of transportation needs, neighborhood by neighborhood, cross-referencing school schedules with transportation availability.
The goal is twofold: to optimize available financial resources and address the infrastructure shortcomings that have long forced hundreds of Afragola students into complicated and unsafe travel. Only with a detailed understanding of demand can we finally redesign a student-friendly transportation network.
