The wave of copper thefts that has been affecting railway infrastructure and strategic construction sites in Campania for weeks continues unabated, severely impacting train traffic. The latest incident occurred overnight in Afragola, where unknown assailants targeted the high-speed rail construction site along the future Naples-Bari line.
Carabinieri officers from the Casoria company's mobile radio unit responded to Via Arena following a reported theft within the work area. An initial inspection revealed that the thieves had managed to steal approximately 120 meters of copper cable, essential material for the railway's technological systems.
This is yet another blow to rail infrastructure, a phenomenon that has recently been causing delays, breakdowns, and outright service interruptions. The situation on the Caserta–Cancello line is particularly emblematic, as it has remained closed for days due to damage and theft of material.
Investigators are working to reconstruct the incident and identify those responsible, including by analyzing video surveillance systems in the area. They suspect organized groups specializing in illicit metal trafficking are behind these incidents, capable of acting in a matter of minutes, yet causing significant damage to the community.

Copper theft is a serious problem affecting Campania. It's unclear how infrastructure can continue to be left unprotected. We hope the Carabinieri can find the culprits as soon as possible.
