Agerola – A traveling "predator," specializing in targeting vulnerable groups, has fallen prey to the Carabinieri. On the night of Saturday, January 31, 2026, officers from the Pescara Company, working closely with their colleagues from the Pianillo Station in Agerola, executed a precautionary detention order issued by the investigating judge of the Torre Annunziata Court.
The Oplonti prosecutor's office has targeted a 37-year-old man from Venosa (Potenza), accused of aggravated fraud.
The telephone trap and the huge loot
The modus operandi follows a sadly tried-and-true script, but made even more heinous by the significant financial damage inflicted on the victims. The suspect, acting with the complicity of a "telephone operator" who is still being identified, targeted two elderly local women.
The technique is psychological terror: a frantic phone call, the voice of a supposed close relative in serious legal difficulty, and the immediate demand for money to avoid arrest or legal consequences.
The two women, panicked, gave in to the demands. The 37-year-old then physically showed up at the victims' homes, posing as the debt collector. The loot was significant: €15.000 in cash and several gold jewelry pieces, the mementos of a lifetime, handed over to the scammer.
Framed by the cameras
The investigation, coordinated by the Torre Annunziata Public Prosecutor's Office, was swift and meticulous. The Carabinieri reconstructed the scammer's movements using footage from public and private video surveillance systems in the area.
The evidentiary framework was reinforced by two key elements:
A successful search, which yielded objective evidence.
The formal identification was carried out by the victims, who had no doubts in identifying the 37-year-old as the man who showed up at their door.
No bracelet: transfer to prison cell
The arrest culminated in a final twist. The investigating judge had initially ordered house arrest with the requirement to wear an electronic bracelet.
However, after completing the formal procedures, the suspect did not indicate a suitable address for serving his sentence and, more importantly, did not consent to the application of the remote control device.
Faced with this refusal and the impossibility of applying the least punitive measure, as provided for by the code, the 37-year-old was immediately transferred to the competent prison, pending the preliminary hearing.

This man's arrest is very important for community safety, but I wonder how people still fall for such elaborate scams. We need to do more to educate older people about these risks.
