San Severo – What appeared to be a tragic and fatal car accident has turned out, according to investigators, to be a brutal femicide. Ciro Caliendo, 48, was arrested this morning on the very serious charge of premeditated murder of his wife, 47-year-old Lucia Salcone.
The officers of the San Severo Highway Police, together with personnel from the Foggia Flying Squad, were the ones who placed the handcuffs on the man's wrists.
The tragic night on the provincial road
The events date back to September 27, 2024. The couple were traveling along Provincial Road 13, in the countryside around San Severo (Foggia), where they lived. Suddenly, the car was engulfed in flames, under circumstances that initially appeared consistent with a dramatic single-vehicle accident.
There was nothing that could be done for Lucia Salcone: her body was found charred inside the fire-ravaged passenger compartment.
From fatality to suspected homicide
From the initial investigations, however, certain elements of the scene did not fully convince investigators. Doubts about the dynamics of the alleged crash prompted the Prosecutor's Office to further investigate, upgrading the crime from vehicular homicide to voluntary manslaughter.
Caliendo had been registered as a suspect in the weeks immediately following the incident, while police and experts worked to reconstruct the exact sequence of events.
The turning point in the investigation and the arrest
Today, the turning point came. The evidence gathered over the months, the result of complex technical assessments and investigative reconstructions, has led the judiciary to conclude that the accident was deliberately faked by the 48-year-old.
The goal was to conceal the premeditated murder of his wife. Given the solid evidence, Caliendo was sent to prison, where he will remain at the disposal of the judicial authorities.
