Avellino – Only the quick reflexes and extremely vigilant attitude of the Penitentiary Police staff prevented an ordinary day from turning into tragedy inside the Avellino prison.
In the women's ward of the Irpinia prison, an inmate attempted suicide twice in the space of a few hours, only to be saved at the last minute by the female officers on duty.
The double attempt and the rescue
According to initial reports, the woman attempted to commit the extreme act using a rudimentary noose. The alarm was raised immediately thanks to the intuition of the police officers on duty who, realizing the danger, intervened quickly, managing to restrain the prisoner and administer first aid.
The woman is currently under observation in the psychiatric ward of Avellino hospital for necessary treatment and monitoring.
The union's applause
Raffaele Troise, head of the UIL FP Penitentiary Police of Avellino, spoke out forcefully on the incident, publicly praising the work of his colleagues.
"Once again, the silent, delicate, and highly professional work carried out by the Penitentiary Police is evident," Troise declared, "called upon daily to deal with situations of profound human distress that go far beyond their security duties."
Staffing emergency and overcrowding
The event brought renewed attention to the chronic problems plaguing the Avellino facility. Troise once again denounced an unsustainable organizational situation, marked by overcrowding and a shortage of specialized staff.
"It's essential to urgently strengthen psychological and health support within the facility," the union representative emphasized. "There are too few support workers, and this shortage ends up falling entirely on the shoulders of the staff, forced to fill staffing gaps that aren't their responsibility."
The appeal to the institutions
In closing, the UIL FP made a heartfelt appeal to all competent authorities to take structural action. The request is clear: ensuring dignified working conditions for officers and an adequate support system for inmates is the only possible way to make the Avellino prison a truly safe and livable place.

This article highlights a serious situation, but in my opinion, simply praising the situation isn't enough. Something more concrete must be done to improve the conditions of inmates and officers, otherwise nothing will change.
