Avellino – The attempt to smuggle narcotics into the Avellino prison continues. This morning, a swift operation by the Penitentiary Police foiled the drug smuggling attempt, confirming the high level of alert among the prison staff.
The raid during the talks
The incident occurred during routine checks to ensure access to interviews with inmates. The officer targeted a woman, a relative of an inmate, whose wary and nervous behavior did not escape the expert eyes of the security staff.
After a thorough investigation, the suspicion became confirmed: the woman had hidden the drugs in her private parts, hoping to evade security and deliver them to her relative. The drugs were seized, and the operation was completed without incident, in full compliance with security protocols.
The union's applause
Raffaele Troise, head of the GAU (General Assembly for the Penitentiary Police) of Avellino, spoke about the incident. While Troise expressed his deep appreciation for the officers' professionalism and promptness, he also took the opportunity to highlight the day-to-day management of the prison, which he described as bordering on collapse.
"The success of this operation is due exclusively to the dedication of the staff," Troise declared, "but we cannot ignore the structural problems affecting the institute."
Overcrowding and safety emergency
The picture painted by the union representative for the Avellino prison is worrying. In recent months, the prison population has skyrocketed, far exceeding the facility's regulatory capacity.
Also weighing on the prison's stability is the management of so-called "troublemakers": individuals who are difficult to place and whose transfers, often requested for reasons of order and security, are sporadic or completely absent. "The situation is dramatic to say the least," Troise concludes, "an urgent U-turn is needed. Without structural interventions, the efforts of the Penitentiary Police risk being undermined by a situation that threatens to deteriorate permanently."
