A roar in the middle of the night startled the few residents of Montaguto, a town of 334 in the Irpinia hinterland. It was just after four o'clock when a gang attacked the ATM at the town's post office, blowing it up using the "marmotta" technique, now infamous in the news of ATM thefts.
The explosion caused significant damage to the post office building, with debris and parts of the equipment being thrown outside. Immediately after the alarm was raised, Carabinieri officers from the Ariano Irpino Company responded, launching surveys and investigations to reconstruct the events of the blast and identify those responsible.
The amount of loot taken by the criminals, who apparently managed to escape before the patrols arrived, has not yet been determined. This incident follows a series of similar attacks that have increasingly targeted ATMs at post offices and banks in the inland areas of the province of Avellino in recent months, fueling concern among residents and local authorities.
