The young man, posing as an Italian Post Office employee and simulating a false system malfunction, tricked the victim into making a €930 bank transfer, believing it would solve a nonexistent technical problem.
The deception technique
The scammer contacted the woman by phone, pretending to be a postal worker, reporting an alleged IT problem that would compromise the security of her bank account. Taking advantage of the victim's good faith and the institutional credibility of the role he was impersonating, he explained that a verification procedure via bank transfer was necessary.
The woman, unaware of the scam, then credited the sum of 930 euros to the coordinates provided by the fake clerk, believing she was protecting her savings.
From reporting to identification
After realizing she had been scammed, the victim filed a complaint with the Carabinieri in Montefalcione, immediately launching an investigation. By analyzing the bank transaction records and reconstructing the sequence of communications, the officers were able to identify the alleged perpetrator.
Once identified, the young man was reported to the competent judicial authorities for aggravated fraud. Investigations are continuing to determine whether the suspect may be connected to other similar telephone fraud incidents in the area.
