The works in progress in Bagnoli in view of theAmerica’s Cup of 2027 officially end up under the scrutiny of the judiciary. Prosecutor's Office of Naples has opened two lines of investigation following complaints filed by a group of citizens concerned about the environmental and health impact of activities underway in the former Italsider area.
At the prosecutor's instigation Nicola Gratteri A pool of magistrates has been established involving two strategic sections of the investigating office: one dedicated to environmental and land protection and one dealing with crimes against public administration. The objective is to verify the fairness of procurement contracts, the regularity of procedures, and the potential exposure of the public to risks related to the movement of potentially harmful materials.
Residents' fears are rooted in a long and unresolved history. The cleanup of Bagnoli has been discussed for over thirty years without any definitive results, and in a few weeks, a new chapter in the investigation into the failure to clean up, initiated by investigators almost twenty years ago, will begin. This context makes all activities in the Bagnoli-Coroglio SIN even more delicate.
In recent days, a delegation of public prosecutors visited the construction site to verify the progress of the work, which has already been the focus of protests and demonstrations. The latest demonstration saw thousands of people take to the streets and was marked by strong controversy after a graffiti against the mayor of Naples and special commissioner of the SIN appeared. Gaetano Manfredi.
"We are ready to cooperate with the Prosecutor's Office," the mayor announced, ensuring "maximum transparency on all ongoing activities" and declaring his full confidence in the judiciary's work. The complaints were filed by lawyers Domenico Ciruzzi and Elena Coccia, who reiterated to the prosecutors the residents' concerns about the potential impact on public health.
At the same time, law enforcement is also investigating other incidents linked to tensions in the area, such as the blockades of trucks transporting material removed from the construction site and the identification of the authors of the graffiti denouncing the mayor. A complex situation, in which the major sporting event is intertwined with old environmental wounds and new social concerns.

It's a bit worrying that the judiciary is intervening in these works, we hope a solution will be found before the America's Cup. The health of citizens must come first, and investigations are necessary.
