The fin whale that had surprised Naples this morning has disappeared without a trace, suddenly appearing in the body of water of the Beverello PierThe cetacean, which remained apparently disoriented for several hours inside the port, apparently found its way out towards the open sea, allowing the gradual return to normality of maritime connections with the islands of the Golfo di Napoli.
The sighting had caused amazement and concern when the animal, at least eight metres long, had reached the docks of the hydrofoil area, swimming for a long time in front of the Maschio Angioino and resurfacing several times after short dives. Two units of the Coast Guard with experts on board Anton Dohrn Zoological Station and Zooprophylactic Institute of Portici, who constantly monitored the situation throughout the morning.
For safety reasons, the maritime authority initially blocked traffic arriving and departing from the port, later allowing a partial resumption and finally a full resumption of services, with hydrofoils diverted to routes far from the whale's movements. The last sighting was shortly after 4:00 PM, just outside the harbor entrance, raising hopes that the whale had managed to find its way back out to sea.
However, some concerns remain about the animal's condition. According to some witnesses, the whale appeared to be in poor health, and given the weakness it displayed while in port, it cannot be ruled out that it may have been struck by passing vessels. Experts continue to monitor the situation closely, confident that the cetacean will be able to permanently leave port waters.
