Little Tommaso, admitted to the intensive care unit at Monaldi Hospital since December 23rd after a heart transplant that resulted in organ damage during removal, is in a condition deemed incompatible with further surgery.

According to the doctors at Bambino Gesù Hospital, the child presents "major contingent contraindications", including "cerebral hemorrhage and active infection associated with a set of systemic conditions incompatible with a combined simultaneous transplant and with clinical prognostic factors highly unfavourable to an early transplant".

In light of this clinical picture, the Roman pediatric center concludes that "there are no indications for a cardiac transplant."

The opinion read on TV by the family's lawyer

The findings of the Bambino Gesù health workers were made public by Francesco Petruzzi, the family's lawyer, during the television program Domenica In.

The negative opinion closes, at least at present, the possibility of the child being able to undergo a second transplant in the short term.

The mother's plea: "Help me find a heart."

Tommaso's mother, Patrizia, also appeared live on television, making an appeal "to the Pope" and "to those in high places" to help find "a little heart" for her son.

"Now I feel only pain and a strong desire for my son to come home. I'm not hoping for another child to die so I can give my son his heart," the woman said, adding that she still has faith in the possibility of another operation: "I hope Bambino Gesù is wrong and that a transplant can still be performed."

A clinical and human case still open

The case thus remains suspended between the medical opinion, which currently rules out a second transplant, and the family's hope of finding an alternative therapeutic solution. Tommaso's situation continues to be closely monitored, both clinically and in the media.

The situation for Tommaso and his family is truly sad. I can't believe the doctors say there are no options. We hope things can improve in the future and that there is hope for him.
